Shopping

Mannheim is one of the most popular shopping cities in south-western Germany. You are guaranteed to find what you are looking for here - as well as things youve never even heard about before. From "inexpensive to "luxurious, from "basic to "extravagant" - Mannheim has everything your heart desires.

Before setting off on your shopping spree, here is another rule of thumb and a few tips: there are also some streets in the quadrates with names but no letter-number combinations, e.g. Breite Strasse, Planken, Fressgass and Kunststrasse. They form the heart of Mannheims shopping world.

The Paradeplatz, surrounded by Stadthaus N1 and various shops, department stores and banks, is considered to be the central meeting point in the city centre. From here you come straight into the pure pedestrian zone Breite Strasse, where you can find diverse in-shops for fashion, shoes, mobile phones and much more.

At the Marktplatz immerse yourself in the inimitable flair of the weekly Mannheim market awaiting you every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday with many fresh delicacies, against the historic backdrop of the old town hall and the parish church. Cosy cafés invite you to linger here.

The Planken is one of the most popular shopping streets in Germany and the number one address for shoes, clothing as well as delicatessen shops. It stretches from the town hall via the Paradeplatz and from there into the pedestrian zone with many street cafes in the direction of the water tower. Covered passages with exclusive specialist stores link the Planken with the adjacent parallel streets, the Fressgass known for jewellery, leather, stationery and tea, as well as the Kunststrasse. Regular markets and diverse events take place on the Kapuzinerplanken.

Friedrichsring and Kaiserring with numerous restaurants, stores and inviting cafés and pubs round off your shopping tour.

Incidentally: considered an ideal souvenir of your shopping trip in the Quadrate City are the sweet specialities from Café Herrdegen - from the Mannheimer Taler to the Mannheimer Würfel. They give you a better understanding of the quadratic street network of the city centre in a Lebkuchen (gingerbread) way. The traditional café is located close to the Paradeplatz in quadrate E2, 8.
