The Hohenstaufen Dynasty and Italy

 - Three Regions of Innovation in Mediaeval Europe -

The exhibition of the states of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse in the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums from 19th September 2010 until 20th February 2011 makes Mannheim the centre of the Staufer Year 2010. Embark on a journey through time into the Middle Ages or discover the Italian way of life in the middle of the Quadrate City.

From 19th September 2010 until 20th February 2011, the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums in Mannheim will be dedicating the major historical show The Hohenstaufen Dynasty and Italy - Three Regions of Innovation in Mediaeval Europe" to the most important dynasty of the High Middle Ages. Thus, they are taking a closer look at three significant central landscapes of the Staufer regime, the Rhine-Neckar region, Upper Italy and Southern Italy. The exhibition presents the epoch-making accomplishments in the fields of art, culture, science, law, economy and religion emanating from these historical regions. With important works of art, some of which have never before been exhibited in Germany, Mannheim will evoke the art and culture in the Staufer era and the networks with Italy.

You do not just want to see the Italian way of life in the museum, but would also like to experience it live? The range of articles available in the Quadrate City is extensive: Italian gold jewellery from Alexander Troncone in Q3, Mediterranean plants from Alfio del Popolo in Q7 or Italian designer fashion from Mode Engelhorn. You can find specialities at Saporis delicatessen in P7 and a typical Italian coffee or espresso in the Café Moro in the ÖVA Passage. A highlight worth experiencing is a guided tour through the glass ice-cream works of the Eiscafé Fontanella in L11. Enjoy Italian delicacies and over 120 types of ice cream made by the family, which is famous far beyond the borders of Mannheim for its invention of spaghetti ice cream. Enjoy your journey to Italy - in the very midst of the Quadrate City!
